Ooh – this is so theoretical issue, that I almost skipped the whole topic. But because the brand positioning is a critical issue for an affiliate marketer, I decided to share some thoughts about it with you.

The job for every marketer is to stand out from the crowd – to become unique in online marketing. Herefrom comes the need for brand positioning statement.

It is easier if a marketer markets some product or service, but more demanding, if he markets his merchant`s products as an affiliate.

When I started some four years back the affiliate marketing, I started to build my brand positioning with the general ”marketing” - theme and then later on narrowed it to ”affiliate marketing”, which is still very broad. In my blog I use a title: ”Affiliate Marketing With Juhani Tontti”, which is narrow enough – I think.

Marketer`s Style Selects the Target Audience.

We all online marketers are small business entrepreneurs, so we have to put our own personality into fire. The good thing is, that we are unique ones, so copying is impossible.

That is the reason, why a writing skill is so valuable. When I write everything by myself, it will build my brand positioning effectively. I believe strongly that my style picks certain audience and pushes away certain audience. This is natural.

I Sharpened my Brand Positioning Further and Selected ”Affiliate Marketing Strategy” As My Promise.

This means that I concentrate on strategic issues in all my writings, not so much on mediums and other technical issues.

How The Gurus are Doing It?

It is very interesting to look some brand positionings from the most successful online marketers, who market in the same market as myself.

Ewen Chia.

It is said that Ewen Chia is the best affiliate marketer in the world ( oh, so modest ). His choice is to write ”Special Reports” about certain affiliate marketing topics.

The monetization happens through selling these reports and through product links in the text of the content. He participates also big online marketing conferences and seminars as a speaker and these happenings get nice amount of media coverage.

What he will not do, is article marketing, blog posts or forum participation.
Ewen has made very clear choices, which build a clear and strong brand image for his name.

Josh Spaulding.

As far as I have noticed, Josh concentrates very much on his great blog, where he shares very practical tips and his own experiences about online marketing. His promise is: ”Internet Marketing with Josh Spaulding – Making Money Through Ethical Marketing.”

This blog as a center point in his marketing, is very interactive and a commentwriter gets feedback quickly. This makes it even more interesting to other people, because they can discuss about the topics almost in real time.

He uses also email marketing through a wide optin list.

Josh writes also ”Special Reports”, which he markets through his blog. What he is not doing is article writing, site updates or forum participating.

If I compare Ewen and Josh, their choices, there are great differences. But one thing is clear. They have selected a very clear brand positionings. As to the activity differences, Josh seems to be a leader with his daily blog comment replies. Ewen relies more on the selling power of his famous reports.

I don`t even try to compare myself to these two giants. I think it is important to select a brand positioning statement, which is realistic to the myself and then to develop that during the time.

Regards,

Juhani
